This church is a dramatic sight about a quarter of a mile above the Dunmow to Ongar road. A sandy track climbs up to it. Kentish ragstone and crumbling cement make it seem externally a very dour place - it is obviously still in use and loved, but in dreadful condition with missing roof tiles and a few broken panes. The setting makes it seem much more remote than it actually is. The church is open every day, and inside is like a time capsule of the 1870s, everything just as it was. Very atmospheric. To the south of the church is an enormous badgers sett - the dead aren't going to get much rest around there.
