Kirby sits between the large village of Thorpe-le-Soken and the jolly seaside town of Walton-on-the-Naze. It is a proper working village, and its church is open every day, so I immediately warmed to both. I came here on the day of the Essex Ride and Stride event 2014, but the church was not taking part.

I thought it odd that the church shared a dedication with its near-neighbour at Thorpe (where, incidentally, the church is kept locked without a keyholder notice). Kirby church was pretty much rebuilt in its entirety in the 19th Century. However, there is a superb range of early 20th Century glass, one of the best in north Essex. The interior is jewel-like, and I thought it was lovely. The churchyard is wooded, and parts have been laid to garden, though not intrusively. A delight.
