St Mary and St Christopher, Panfield

Panfield

Click on the 'play' symbol in the second image to see all my photographs of this church as a slide show, then click on any image in the slideshow to see it large in a new page.

Alternatively, if you don't have flash enabled, you can go straight to the set for this church on flickr.

I headed north from the centre of the large, dull town of Braintree, and threaded my way through the estates. About a mile out of town is the sleepy village of Panfield and its church.

Locked without a keyholder. Typical small Essex church with its wooden bellcote. The setting is very pretty, on a bluff looking eastwards, the churchyard largely converted into a nature reserve with signs everywhere telling you interesting things. I would very much liked to have seen inside - there are 15th century Saints in glass and an east window by Farrar Bell, but it is not the wish of the Panfield PCC that the likes of you and I should see such things.

A dying church, of course, but perhaps in the future when the church becomes redundant it will be turned into a visitor centre for all the nature, and we'll all be able to see inside.
